THE QUESTION THIS GUIDE ANSWERS

Explain last-click attribution and its value and limitations for closing activity.

THE SHORT ANSWER

A last-click rule assigns all conversion credit to the final eligible click in the observed path. The word eligible matters: platforms can apply different rules, including the treatment of direct visits.

Read the rule behind the name

Google Analytics documents a paid-and-organic last-click model that generally ignores direct visits unless the path is entirely direct. A generic last-click diagram does not necessarily reproduce every platform’s eligibility rules. Read the report definition before comparing it with another system.

For a fashion purchase, a shopper may return directly after first seeing a social ad and later searching for the product. The visible final visit and the interaction receiving credit are not always the same thing.

Understand the closing perspective

A last-click view can help examine interactions close to purchase. That can be useful when reviewing a product-specific search campaign or a lifecycle message, provided the objective and attribution basis are clear.

It can also make demand-capturing channels look like the entire story. A branded search interaction may occur after substantial discovery activity. Keep the earlier path and the campaign’s intended role in view before concluding that discovery activity should be reduced.

Compare without changing the question

Use the same purchase cohort, source coverage and value definition when comparing allocation rules. Investigate changes in channel classification or observation coverage before attributing the entire difference to the chosen model.

A practical review combines the closing perspective with what happened in the business: new versus returning customers, assortment, promotions and net order value. Record the interpretation as a hypothesis when the evidence cannot establish a causal explanation.

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE

Email closes an observed journey

In an illustrative paid-social → search → email journey ending in a €120 order, a simple last-click rule gives email €120. A first-click rule gives paid social €120. Neither result changes the order total or proves what would have happened without a touchpoint.

Turn the guide into a useful review

  1. Confirm how the report treats direct traffic.
  2. Distinguish closing activity from demand creation.
  3. Keep the compared cohort and value identical.
  4. Avoid interpreting assigned credit as causal lift.

Questions about this approach?

Is last-click always the wrong model?

No. It is a clearly defined perspective with limitations. Its usefulness depends on the decision, the eligible interactions and the quality of the observations.
